My principal intention in Obsessions Sombres was to build a short work whose materials would be exclusively derived from a single sonic idea, that is, a chromatic trill that ends up with a cluster-chord in the piano, and which returns repeatedly as an obsession.

The work was commissioned by the 2012 ALEA III workshop for young composers.
