Terror and Silence. And Between Them a Flame
for bassoon, trombone and percussion
This trio for bassoon, trombone and percussion, is part of a larger series of works, which draw their fundamental ideas from the philosophical statement of the Greek author and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis. The statement’s title is Ascetics/Salvatores Dei (=spiritual exercises/the saviours of God).
Briefly, one of the quintessential representations of the work’s ideas is the following: “Let us unite, let us hold each other tightly, let us merge our hearts, let us create - so long as the warmth of this earth endures, so long as no earthquakes, cataclysms, icebergs or comets come to destroy us - let us create for Earth a brain and a heart, let us give a human meaning to the superhuman struggle”.
This idea is applied to this work because all the three instruments equally contribute to the overall textural or gestural motions and transitions. There are no primary and secondary roles and the trio is one force, one heart, one brain. One force, unified and solid. One heart, which makes them all three united. One brain, which struggles to surpass itself.
